What Makes Walkerville Special:
Walkerville stands out as one of Windsor's most distinctive neighbourhoods. Here's why locals love it and visitors keep coming back:
Beautiful historic homes line the streets, featuring Victorian, Edwardian, and Tudor Revival styles that tell the story of the area's prosperous past
Walkable downtown area on Wyandotte Street East with independent shops, restaurants and cafes. Check out Urban Art Market and Jones & Co for unique finds
Strong sense of community with regular events, festivals, and farmers' markets
Lush green spaces like Willistead Park, centered around the magnificent Willistead Manor
Craft breweries and distilleries continuing the neighbourhood's tradition of fine beverages
When was Walkerville founded?
Walkerville was founded in 1858 by Hiram Walker, an American entrepreneur and distiller. Unlike many towns that grow organically, Walkerville was actually planned from the beginning as a "model town" or company town built around the Hiram Walker distillery.
Walker designed the town with careful planning, including:
Sturdy brick homes for workers
Churches, schools, and public spaces
A music hall and other amenities
Paved streets (rare for that time!)
Its own water and electrical systems
This careful planning is why Walkerville still has such a distinct and cohesive character today, over 160 years later.
Who was Walkerville named after?
No surprise here – Walkerville was named after its founder, Hiram Walker! Born in Massachusetts in 1816, Walker was a visionary businessman who moved to Detroit and then across the river to Canada.
He named his new development after himself, and the name stuck. Today, his legacy lives on not just in the neighbourhood's name, but in the architectural details, street layouts, and of course, the famous distillery that still produces whisky on the same grounds.
When did Walkerville become Windsor?
Walkerville remained an independent town until 1935, when it was annexed by the City of Windsor. This happened during the Great Depression, when economic hardships made it practical for several of the Border Cities (including Walkerville, Ford City, Sandwich, and East Windsor) to merge into one municipality.
Even though it's officially been part of Windsor for nearly 90 years, locals still refer to the area as Walkerville, and it maintains its distinct identity and community feel.
What whiskey is made in Windsor, Ontario?
The most famous whisky made in Windsor is Canadian Club, which was originally produced by Hiram Walker at his distillery. Today, the Hiram Walker & Sons Distillery in Walkerville continues to produce Canadian Club, as well as other popular brands like:
JP Wiser's Canadian Whisky
Lot 40 Canadian Whisky
Pike Creek Canadian Whisky
Gooderham & Worts Canadian Whisky
The distillery remains one of the largest whisky production facilities in North America and continues to be a major landmark in Walkerville.
What happened to Hiram Walker?
Hiram Walker led a successful and full life, passing away in 1899 at the age of 83. After his death, his sons took over the business operations. While the Walker family eventually sold their interest in the distillery business in the 1920s, their impact on the area remains immense.
The Walker family legacy includes:
The architectural character of Walkerville
Willistead Manor (built by Hiram's son Edward)
Walker Airport (now Windsor International Airport)
Numerous charitable contributions and endowments
Today, you can learn more about Hiram Walker at the Canadian Club Brand Centre and through walking tours of the neighbourhood.
